1999: Ruth King

Ruth King came to the Hazlegrove Lectureship from Ohio State, where she was an associate professor in the School of Crafts, and a well-known figure in the glass art world. Ruth came with some clear ideas about what she wanted to accomplish at MIT. She set up a computer in a small office space in building 12, and with the aid of a CAD specialist, studied possible ways of modeling the optics of glass on computer. In the hot shop, Ruth continued a series of figurative pieces based on the human body, using the complex “murrine” (or fused tile), technique. Ruth’s demos were fascinating and well attended, as was her lecture on her own work.
